I think its up to viewer interpretation and who's to say spike thinks of both Celestia and twilight as parents and family is what you make of it and if blood truly mattered than no child/teenager/adult aka basically anyone would be hated or disowned for being gay/lesbian ,trans or by race. By the way the blood is thicker than water is not the full quote nor does it mean what you think it does.
